Definition
Let a homogeneous isotropic linear elastic plate occupy , with P-wave speed and S-wave speed , and with both faces free of traction. A Lamb wave is a nonzero elastodynamic solution without body force of the form with wave number and angular frequency . Write and . Such solutions exist exactly when satisfies one of the Rayleigh–Lamb equations:
- symmetric modes, with even and odd in :
- antisymmetric modes, with odd and even in :
Remarks
Each equation has infinitely many branches , labelled and . Example: the lowest symmetric mode at long wavelength, , travels at the plate speed , where is Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and the density. At short wavelength, , the speeds of both and tend to the Rayleigh wave speed, because each face then behaves like the surface of a half-space.
Non-example: a horizontally polarized shear wave in the plate, with displacement along , is a guided wave too. Its displacement has no component in the plane, so it is not of the form above; it is called an SH plate mode.
