Landau theory
Builds on Order parameterCritical exponent
Definition
Let be a scalar order parameter whose symmetry group acts by . Let be the temperature, a critical temperature, and an external field conjugate to . The Landau theory of the transition is given by a Landau free energy density where:
- is a smooth function of and , are constants;
- without field (), is even in , as the symmetry requires;
- the equilibrium order parameter is a global minimizer of , and the free energy density is .
Remarks
Example: at , set . The equation and the sign of give for and for . So , which is the critical exponent . In the same way, the susceptibility at is above and below, so . At , , so , and the free energy below gives a jump of the specific heat, so .
Non-example: a free energy with a cubic term , , fails clause 2. Such a term is allowed when no symmetry forbids it, and it makes the transition first order, with a jump of .
For a vector order parameter in with symmetry , and are replaced by and .

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
