Langlands decomposition
Builds on Semisimple Lie groupIwasawa decomposition of a Lie groupParabolic subgroupNilpotent Lie group
Statement
Let be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center, with an Iwasawa decomposition . Let be the Lie algebra of , and let be the positive restricted roots used to define . Let be the simple ones. Fix a subset and let be the set of restricted roots in the linear span of . Put and . Let , let , and let be the centralizer of under the adjoint action. Let be the set of with for every continuous homomorphism . Then is a parabolic subgroup of , and:
- and are closed subgroups that commute with each other, , and ;
- is a closed, simply connected, nilpotent normal subgroup of ;
- the map , , is a diffeomorphism.
The factorization is the Langlands decomposition of .
Remarks
Every parabolic subgroup that contains equals for exactly one , and every parabolic subgroup is conjugate to such a . The group is a Levi factor of ; it is reductive, and is a vector group, isomorphic to with .
For , the group is and is the minimal parabolic subgroup. For , one gets , and , since a semisimple group has no nontrivial continuous homomorphism to .
Example: in , a subset corresponds to block sizes . Then is the group of block upper triangular matrices, and is the group of block unipotent ones. The group consists of the matrices with and determinant . The group consists of the block diagonal matrices of determinant whose blocks have determinant .

For a student
The decomposition is the basis of parabolic induction. A representation of and a character of give a representation of , which one induces to . The principal series come from , and Langlands used general to classify the irreducible admissible representations of . The groups are again reductive groups, which makes induction on the size of the group possible.
