Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a Riemannian manifold with Levi-Civita connection ∇\nabla. For a smooth function ff on MM, the gradient grad⁡f\operatorname{grad} f is the vector field with g(grad⁡f,X)=df(X)g(\operatorname{grad} f, X) = df(X) for every vector field XX. For a vector field YY, the divergence div⁡Y\operatorname{div} Y is the function tr⁡(X↦∇XY)\tr(X \mapsto \nabla_X Y). The Laplace–Beltrami operator is the operator Δ\Delta on smooth functions given by Δf=div⁡(grad⁡f).\Delta f = \operatorname{div}(\operatorname{grad} f).

Remarks

In local coordinates x1,…,xnx^1, \dots, x^n, with gijg_{ij} the metric, gijg^{ij} its inverse and ∣g∣=det⁡(gij)\abs{g} = \det(g_{ij}), Δf=1∣g∣∑i,j∂i(∣g∣ gij∂jf).\Delta f = \frac{1}{\sqrt{\abs{g}}} \sum_{i,j} \partial_i \bigl(\sqrt{\abs{g}} \, g^{ij} \partial_j f\bigr). Equivalently Δf=∑i,jgij(∂i∂jf−∑kΓijk∂kf)\Delta f = \sum_{i,j} g^{ij} \bigl(\partial_i \partial_j f - \sum_k \Gamma^k_{ij} \partial_k f\bigr), with Γijk\Gamma^k_{ij} the Christoffel symbols.

Example: on the unit sphere S2S^2 with coordinates (θ,φ)(\theta, \varphi) and metric dθ2+sin⁡2θ dφ2d\theta^2 + \sin^2\theta \, d\varphi^2, one has ∣g∣=sin⁡θ\sqrt{\abs{g}} = \sin\theta and Δf=1sin⁡θ∂θ(sin⁡θ ∂θf)+1sin⁡2θ∂φ2f.\Delta f = \frac{1}{\sin\theta} \partial_\theta(\sin\theta \, \partial_\theta f) + \frac{1}{\sin^2\theta} \partial_\varphi^2 f. For f=cos⁡θf = \cos\theta this gives 1sin⁡θ∂θ(−sin⁡2θ)=−2cos⁡θ\frac{1}{\sin\theta} \partial_\theta(-\sin^2\theta) = -2\cos\theta.

Non-example: on ℝ2∖{0}\R^2 \setminus \set{0} in polar coordinates (r,θ)(r, \theta), the operator ∂r2+∂θ2\partial_r^2 + \partial_\theta^2 is not the Laplace–Beltrami operator of the Euclidean metric dr2+r2dθ2dr^2 + r^2 d\theta^2. The formula above gives Δf=∂r2f+1r∂rf+1r2∂θ2f\Delta f = \partial_r^2 f + \frac{1}{r} \partial_r f + \frac{1}{r^2} \partial_\theta^2 f.

With this sign convention Δ\Delta is the usual Laplacian ∑i∂i2\sum_i \partial_i^2 on ℝn\R^n and −Δ-\Delta has nonnegative spectrum on a compact manifold. Many geometers use the opposite sign, Δ=−div⁡grad⁡\Delta = -\operatorname{div} \operatorname{grad}. On functions, −Δ-\Delta equals the Hodge Laplacian δd\delta d.
