Large sieve
Builds on Exponential sumMöbius function
Definition
For real write and let be the distance from to the nearest integer. Let be an integer, an integer and complex numbers, and let an exponential sum. Let , and let be real numbers with for all . The large sieve inequality is The large sieve is the method that bounds sifted sets by this inequality. Its arithmetic form reads as follows. For each prime , let residue classes modulo be removed, with . If is a set of integers in that meets none of the removed classes, then where is the Möbius function.
Remarks
Example: take , so and for each . The -separated points in number at most , so the left side is at most , which is the right side. Non-example: if the separation fails, say , the left side is , which exceeds any fixed bound as grows. The fractions with and are -separated modulo , which gives the form The constant is due to Montgomery–Vaughan and Selberg.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
