Laser rate equations
Definition
Consider a single-mode laser with an ideal four-level gain medium. Let be the population inversion density and the photon density in the cavity. Let be the pump rate and the coefficient of stimulated emission. Let be the lifetime of the upper laser level and the photon lifetime in the cavity. The laser rate equations, without spontaneous emission into the mode, are the system of ordinary differential equations
Remarks
The steady states give the threshold. A steady state with needs , so . The first equation then gives , which is positive exactly when , the threshold pump rate. Above threshold the inversion is clamped at and the photon density grows linearly with the pump. Below threshold the only steady state is , .
Example: with , , and , the threshold is and the steady state is , ; one checks and .
Non-example: the equations do not track the phase of the field or the polarization of the medium. So they cannot describe effects such as the Lorenz-type chaos of the Maxwell–Bloch equations. Many variants exist, for example with a term for spontaneous emission into the mode or for three-level media.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
