Lattice
Builds on Partial orderJoin and meet
Definition
A lattice is a partially ordered set in which every two elements have a join and a meet .
Algebraic form: a lattice is a set with two binary operations and such that, for all :
- and ;
- and ;
- and .
Remarks
The two forms are equivalent. From a lattice order, the join and meet satisfy clauses 1 to 3. From the operations, the order is recovered by , which holds exactly when . The idempotent laws and follow from the absorption laws in clause 3. Example: ordered by divisibility is a lattice with and . Indeed is a common multiple of and and divides every common multiple. Non-example: the poset with and and no other strict relations is not a lattice. The elements and have the two upper bounds and , which are incomparable, so does not exist.
