Definition
Let be a variety of algebras. The lattice of subvarieties of is the set of all subvarieties of , ordered by inclusion. In it, the meet of a family is the intersection . The join is the smallest subvariety that contains , which is .
Remarks
An intersection of varieties is a variety, since it is defined by the union of their identities. So is a complete lattice, with least element the trivial variety and greatest element . The maps and are inverse dual isomorphisms between and the lattice of equational theories that contain . Example: for the variety of Boolean algebras, has exactly two elements, the trivial variety and itself. Example: for abelian groups, the subvarieties are for and the whole variety, and if and only if . Non-example: the join is not the union in general, since the union of and does not contain .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
