Definition
Let be a ring with identity. The Laurent polynomial ring is the monoid ring of the additive group , with the element written . Its elements are the finite sums with integers and . Addition is termwise, and multiplication is determined by for and by for .
Remarks
Example: and are Laurent polynomials, and . Non-example: the series is not a Laurent polynomial, since it has infinitely many nonzero terms; it lies in the ring of Laurent series. The ring contains the polynomial ring , and is a unit with inverse . For a commutative ring , is the localization of at the multiplicative set . If is an integral domain, the units of are the elements with a unit of and . The ring in several variables is the monoid ring .
