Group theory and generalizations Example
Laver table
Example
For , the Laver table is the set with the unique binary operation such that:
- for , and ;
- for all .
So is a shelf: clause 2 is left self-distributivity. The table can be computed row by row from the bottom, where row is . For one uses , where lies in a row already known.
For this gives the table of , with indexing rows and indexing columns:
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 4 | 2 | 4 |
| 2 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 4 |
| 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| 4 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
Check of one instance of clause 2: , and . All instances of clause 2 hold in . The shelf is not a rack, since the row of takes only the values and .
Remarks
Each row of is periodic, and its period is a power of . Laver proved that, if a rank-into-rank large cardinal exists, then the period of the row of in tends to infinity as grows. No proof of this statement in ZFC alone is known. The period of the row of grows extremely slowly: it is in and in . Dougherty showed that the least for which it reaches , if there is one, is enormous.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
