Lawvere–Tierney topology
Builds on ToposSubobject classifier
Definition
Let be a topos with subobject classifier . Let be the characteristic morphism of the subobject . A Lawvere–Tierney topology on is a morphism such that:
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Example: the identity satisfies all three equations. Example: the double negation is a Lawvere–Tierney topology in every topos. Non-example: in , with and , the negation sends to , so and clause 1 fails. An object is a -sheaf when, for every monomorphism whose characteristic morphism satisfies , where is the unique morphism, every morphism extends uniquely along . The -sheaves form a topos , and the inclusion has a left adjoint that preserves finite limits. Another name for a Lawvere–Tierney topology is a local operator.
