Definition
Let be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure , and let . For and , let The left regular representation of is the map from to the unitary operators on .
Remarks
Each is unitary because is left invariant, and because . The map is continuous for each , so is a unitary representation. The right regular representation is , where is the modular function; it is unitarily equivalent to .
Example: for a finite group with counting measure, is the group algebra and . Every irreducible representation of appears in with multiplicity .
Non-example: the formula does not define a representation when is not abelian. Indeed , so , and when .
For , the integrated operator is convolution by , and the norm closure of these operators is the reduced group C*-algebra.
