Legendrian submanifold

Builds on Contact manifold

Definition

Let (M,ξ)(M, \xi) be a contact manifold of dimension 2n+12n + 1. A Legendrian submanifold of (M,ξ)(M, \xi) is a submanifold L⊂ML \subset M of dimension nn such that TxL⊂ξxT_x L \subset \xi_x for every x∈Lx \in L. A Legendrian knot is a Legendrian submanifold of a contact 33-manifold that is diffeomorphic to a circle.

Remarks

If ξ=ker⁡α\xi = \ker \alpha, the condition is that α\alpha restricts to zero on LL. Then dαd\alpha also restricts to zero on LL, so each TxLT_x L is an isotropic subspace of the symplectic vector space (ξx,dα)(\xi_x, d\alpha), of dimension 2n2n. Hence a submanifold tangent to ξ\xi has dimension at most nn, and Legendrian submanifolds are the tangent submanifolds of maximal dimension.

Example: in ℝ3\R^3 with α=dz−y dx\alpha = dz - y\,dx, the xx-axis {y=z=0}\set{y = z = 0} is Legendrian, since along it dz=0dz = 0 and y=0y = 0. More generally, for a smooth f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R, the curve {(x,f′(x),f(x))}\set{(x, f'(x), f(x))} is Legendrian, since dz−y dx=f′(x) dx−f′(x) dx=0dz - y\,dx = f'(x)\,dx - f'(x)\,dx = 0 on it.

Non-example: the zz-axis in the same space is not Legendrian, since α(∂z)=1≠0\alpha(\partial_z) = 1 \ne 0.
