Definition
Let be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, and write for the space of smooth vector fields on . A Levi-Civita connection of is an affine connection on such that:
- is torsion-free: for all , where is the Lie bracket;
- is compatible with : for all .
Remarks
Example: on with , let be the vector field whose components are . Then has components , which is , and the product rule gives clause 2 for .
Non-example: on with the Euclidean metric, let , where is the flat connection above and is the cross product. This is an affine connection, and clause 2 holds because . Its torsion is , which is not zero, so clause 1 fails.
The two clauses determine ; this is the fundamental theorem of Riemannian geometry. In coordinates, with the Christoffel symbols
