Definition
Let be a metric space with its Borel σ-algebra . Let be the set of Borel probability measures on . For and , let . The Lévy–Prokhorov metric is the map given by The value is an infimum.
Remarks
The function is a metric on , and because every satisfies both inequalities. If is separable, then if and only if converges weakly to . If is separable and complete, then so is .
Example: let be the Dirac measure at , and let . If , then every Borel set containing has , so , and symmetrically. Hence .
Non-example: for the value is not admissible. Take : then , and fails.
On , the points and give , while the total variation distance stays equal to .
