Lickorish–Wallace theorem

Builds on Dehn surgery3-manifoldLink

Statement

Let MM be a closed connected orientable 3-manifold. Then there is a link L⊂S3L \subset S^3 such that MM is homeomorphic to the result of integral Dehn surgery on LL. Moreover, LL can be chosen so that each component is unknotted and each surgery coefficient is +1+1 or −1-1.

Remarks

Wallace and Lickorish proved the theorem independently, by different methods. Idea of Lickorish's proof: write MM as a Heegaard splitting whose gluing map differs from that of a standard splitting of S3S^3 by a homeomorphism of the Heegaard surface. By the Dehn–Lickorish theorem, this homeomorphism is isotopic to a product of Dehn twists. Each Dehn twist can be realised by a ±1\pm 1 surgery on a copy of its curve pushed slightly off the surface into S3S^3, and such a copy is unknotted.

The theorem at work: S2×S1S^2 \times S^1 is 00-surgery on the unknot, and the lens space L(p,1)L(p, 1) is integral surgery with coefficient ±p\pm p on the unknot, depending on the orientation convention. The theorem implies that every closed orientable 33-manifold bounds a compact orientable 44-manifold, obtained from the 44-ball by attaching 22-handles along LL.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the starting point of the description of 33-manifolds by framed links, and of Kirby calculus, which says when two framed links give the same manifold. Quantum invariants of 33-manifolds, such as the Witten–Reshetikhin–Turaev invariants, are defined from link invariants through such surgery presentations. Its 44-dimensional reading, that every 33-manifold bounds a 44-manifold built with 22-handles, connects it with the vanishing of the oriented cobordism group in dimension 33.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
