Definition

Let 𝔀\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra over a field FF, and let MM be a 𝔀\mathfrak{g}-module. For nβ‰₯0n \ge 0, let Cn(𝔀,M)C^n(\mathfrak{g}, M) be the space of alternating nn-linear maps 𝔀nβ†’M\mathfrak{g}^n \to M, with C0(𝔀,M)=MC^0(\mathfrak{g}, M) = M. Define d ⁣:Cn(𝔀,M)β†’Cn+1(𝔀,M)d \colon C^n(\mathfrak{g}, M) \to C^{n+1}(\mathfrak{g}, M) by

(dΟ‰)(x0,…,xn)=βˆ‘i=0n(βˆ’1)ixiβ‹…Ο‰(x0,…,xi^,…,xn)+βˆ‘0≀i<j≀n(βˆ’1)i+jΟ‰([xi,xj],x0,…,xi^,…,xj^,…,xn),\begin{aligned} (d\omega)(x_0, \dots, x_n) &= \sum_{i=0}^{n} (-1)^i x_i \cdot \omega(x_0, \dots, \widehat{x_i}, \dots, x_n) \\ &\quad + \sum_{0 \le i < j \le n} (-1)^{i+j} \omega([x_i, x_j], x_0, \dots, \widehat{x_i}, \dots, \widehat{x_j}, \dots, x_n), \end{aligned}

where a hat marks an omitted argument. Then d∘d=0d \circ d = 0, so (Cβˆ™(𝔀,M),d)(C^\bullet(\mathfrak{g}, M), d) is a cochain complex. The Lie algebra cohomology of 𝔀\mathfrak{g} with coefficients in MM is Hn(𝔀,M)=ker⁑(d ⁣:Cnβ†’Cn+1)/im⁑(d ⁣:Cnβˆ’1β†’Cn),H^n(\mathfrak{g}, M) = \ker\big(d \colon C^n \to C^{n+1}\big) / \operatorname{im}\big(d \colon C^{n-1} \to C^n\big), with Cβˆ’1=0C^{-1} = 0.

Remarks

The complex is the Chevalley–Eilenberg complex. In low degrees, H0(𝔀,M)={m∈M:xβ‹…m=0Β forΒ allΒ x}H^0(\mathfrak{g}, M) = \set{m \in M : x \cdot m = 0 \text{ for all } x}, the invariants. H1(𝔀,M)H^1(\mathfrak{g}, M) is the space of linear maps D ⁣:𝔀→MD \colon \mathfrak{g} \to M with D[x,y]=xβ‹…D(y)βˆ’yβ‹…D(x)D[x, y] = x \cdot D(y) - y \cdot D(x), modulo the maps x↦xβ‹…mx \mapsto x \cdot m. Example: let 𝔀=Fx\mathfrak{g} = F x be one-dimensional; then Cn=0C^n = 0 for nβ‰₯2n \ge 2 and dm=(x↦xβ‹…m)d m = (x \mapsto x \cdot m) on C0C^0. So H0(𝔀,M)=ker⁑(x)H^0(\mathfrak{g}, M) = \ker(x) and H1(𝔀,M)β‰…M/xMH^1(\mathfrak{g}, M) \cong M / xM; for trivial M=FM = F both are FF. Non-example: dropping the bracket terms from dd gives a map that does not square to zero. For m∈Mm \in M, the result would be (x0,x1)↦x0x1mβˆ’x1x0m=[x0,x1]β‹…m(x_0, x_1) \mapsto x_0 x_1 m - x_1 x_0 m = [x_0, x_1] \cdot m, which is nonzero for 𝔰𝔩2(F)\mathfrak{sl}_2(F) acting on F2F^2; the bracket term βˆ’Ο‰([x0,x1])-\omega([x_0, x_1]) cancels it. Equivalently, Hn(𝔀,M)β‰…Ext⁑U(𝔀)n(F,M)H^n(\mathfrak{g}, M) \cong \operatorname{Ext}^n_{U(\mathfrak{g})}(F, M), where U(𝔀)U(\mathfrak{g}) is the universal enveloping algebra.
