Definition
Let be a field. A Lie algebra over is a vector space over together with a bilinear map , called the Lie bracket, such that:
- for all .
- for all (the Jacobi identity).
Remarks
Example: with the cross product is a real Lie algebra. The cross product is bilinear and . The Jacobi identity follows from the rule : summing over the three cyclic permutations, the six terms cancel in pairs.
Non-example: with the bracket is bilinear, but it fails clause 1, since .
Clause 1 and bilinearity give anticommutativity, , by expanding . If the characteristic of is not , anticommutativity implies clause 1. The same definition with a commutative ring in place of and a module in place of the vector space gives Lie algebras over a commutative ring. Lie algebras are usually written in Fraktur letters such as , and .
