Definition

Let π”ž\mathfrak a and 𝔀\mathfrak g be Lie algebras over a field kk. Let 𝔒\mathfrak e be a Lie algebra, and let i ⁣:π”žβ†’π”’i \colon \mathfrak a \to \mathfrak e and p ⁣:𝔒→𝔀p \colon \mathfrak e \to \mathfrak g be Lie algebra homomorphisms. The triple (𝔒,i,p)(\mathfrak e, i, p) is an extension of 𝔀\mathfrak g by π”ž\mathfrak a if 0βŸΆπ”žβ†’Β i 𝔒→ pΒ π”€βŸΆ00 \longrightarrow \mathfrak a \xrightarrow{\ i\ } \mathfrak e \xrightarrow{\ p\ } \mathfrak g \longrightarrow 0 is a short exact sequence: ii is injective, pp is surjective and im⁑i=ker⁑p\im i = \ker p.

Remarks

The image i(π”ž)i(\mathfrak a) is then an ideal of 𝔒\mathfrak e, and pp induces an isomorphism 𝔒/i(π”ž)≅𝔀\mathfrak e / i(\mathfrak a) \cong \mathfrak g. The extension is central if i(π”ž)i(\mathfrak a) lies in the center of 𝔒\mathfrak e. It is split if there is a Lie algebra homomorphism s ⁣:𝔀→𝔒s \colon \mathfrak g \to \mathfrak e with p∘s=id⁑p \circ s = \id; then 𝔒\mathfrak e is a semidirect product of i(π”ž)i(\mathfrak a) and s(𝔀)s(\mathfrak g).

Example: let 𝔒\mathfrak e be the Heisenberg algebra with basis x,y,zx, y, z and [x,y]=z[x, y] = z, the other brackets being 00. Let π”ž=k\mathfrak a = k with i(1)=zi(1) = z, and let 𝔀=k2\mathfrak g = k^2 abelian with p(ax+by+cz)=(a,b)p(ax + by + cz) = (a, b). Then pp is a homomorphism because it kills every bracket and 𝔀\mathfrak g is abelian, and ker⁑p=kz=im⁑i\ker p = k z = \im i. This is a central extension that does not split. Any elements of 𝔒\mathfrak e mapping to (1,0)(1, 0) and (0,1)(0, 1) have the form x+czx + cz and y+cβ€²zy + c'z, and their bracket is zβ‰ 0z \ne 0, while a splitting needs bracket 00.

Non-example: the inclusion kz→𝔒k z \to \mathfrak e followed by the zero map 𝔒→k2\mathfrak e \to k^2 is not an extension, since the zero map is not surjective and its kernel is not kzk z.
