Definition
Let be a Lie algebra over a field . Let act on , a tensor product, by , the tensor square of the adjoint action. A Lie bialgebra structure on is a linear map such that:
- makes a Lie coalgebra;
- for all (cocycle condition).
Remarks
Example: any Lie algebra with is a Lie bialgebra, since both clauses reduce to . A richer example is with a cobracket built from its standard basis, which is the classical limit of the quantum group .
Non-example: let with basis and . Define and . Clause 2 for , requires , but , so clause 2 fails.
Clause 2 says that is a -cocycle of with values in the module . If is finite-dimensional, the transpose of is a Lie bracket on the dual , and the transpose of the bracket of is a compatible cobracket on .
