Definition
Let be a vector space over a field . Let be the flip , and let be the cyclic permutation , on tensor products over . A Lie coalgebra structure on is a linear map , the cobracket, such that:
- (antisymmetry);
- (co-Jacobi identity).
Remarks
Example: let be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra and its dual space. Identify with the bilinear forms on , and set . Antisymmetry of follows from , and the co-Jacobi identity is the Jacobi identity of read through . Conversely, for a finite-dimensional Lie coalgebra , the transpose of is a Lie bracket on , so the two notions are dual to each other.
Non-example: with fails clause 1, since when the characteristic of is not .
Since is antisymmetric, one can view it as a map in characteristic not .
