Definition

Let ℂ[∂]\C[\partial] be the polynomial ring over ℂ\C in one variable ∂\partial, and let RR be a module over ℂ[∂]\C[\partial]. Let λ\lambda and μ\mu be further variables, and write ℂ[λ]⊗R\C[\lambda] \otimes R for the polynomials in λ\lambda with coefficients in RR. A Lie conformal algebra structure on RR is a ℂ\C-bilinear map R×R→ℂ[λ]⊗RR \times R \to \C[\lambda] \otimes R, written (a,b)↦[aλb](a, b) \mapsto [a_\lambda b], such that for all a,b,c∈Ra, b, c \in R:

  1. [∂aλb]=−λ[aλb][\partial a_\lambda b] = -\lambda [a_\lambda b] and [aλ∂b]=(∂+λ)[aλb][a_\lambda \partial b] = (\partial + \lambda) [a_\lambda b];
  2. [bλa]=−[a−λ−∂b][b_\lambda a] = -[a_{-\lambda - \partial} b];
  3. [aλ[bμc] ]=[ [aλb]λ+μc]+[bμ[aλc] ][a_\lambda [b_\mu c]\,] = [\,[a_\lambda b]_{\lambda + \mu} c] + [b_\mu [a_\lambda c]\,].

In clause 2, if [aλb]=∑jλjcj[a_\lambda b] = \sum_j \lambda^j c_j with cj∈Rc_j \in R, then [a−λ−∂b][a_{-\lambda - \partial} b] means ∑j(−λ−∂)jcj\sum_j (-\lambda - \partial)^j c_j. Clause 3 is an identity of polynomials in λ\lambda and μ\mu with coefficients in RR.

Remarks

Example: the Virasoro conformal algebra R=ℂ[∂]LR = \C[\partial] L, free of rank one, with [LλL]=(∂+2λ)L[L_\lambda L] = (\partial + 2\lambda) L, extended to RR by clause 1. Check of clause 2: −[L−λ−∂L]=−(∂+2(−λ−∂))L=(∂+2λ)L-[L_{-\lambda - \partial} L] = -(\partial + 2(-\lambda - \partial)) L = (\partial + 2\lambda) L.

Example: for a Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, the current conformal algebra ℂ[∂]⊗𝔤\C[\partial] \otimes \mathfrak{g} with [aλb]=[a,b][a_\lambda b] = [a, b] for a,b∈𝔤a, b \in \mathfrak{g}.

Non-example: R=ℂ[∂]LR = \C[\partial] L with [LλL]=λL[L_\lambda L] = \lambda L fails clause 2, since −[L−λ−∂L]=(λ+∂)L≠λL-[L_{-\lambda - \partial} L] = (\lambda + \partial) L \ne \lambda L.

The coefficients a(j)ba_{(j)} b in [aλb]=∑jλjj!a(j)b[a_\lambda b] = \sum_j \frac{\lambda^j}{j!} a_{(j)} b are called the jj-th products.
