Definition
Let be a Lie group with identity and let be a smooth manifold. A (left) Lie group action of on is a map , written , such that:
- for all ;
- for all and ;
- is smooth.
Remarks
Clauses 1 and 2 say that is a group action; clause 3 is the smoothness condition. Right actions are defined in the same way with .
Example: acts on by . The identity matrix fixes every vector, , and the map is polynomial in the entries, hence smooth.
Non-example: let act on by , with the real cube root. This is a group action, since , and it is continuous. It is not smooth: the map is not differentiable at .
Each acts by a diffeomorphism of with inverse given by .
