Description

Let FF be a field. The Lie operad Lie\mathrm{Lie} is the operad of vector spaces over FF whose algebras are the Lie algebras over FF. Its component Lie(n)\mathrm{Lie}(n) is the subspace of the free Lie algebra on x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n spanned by the bracket monomials in which each xix_i occurs exactly once. The symmetric group SnS_n acts on Lie(n)\mathrm{Lie}(n) by permuting the variables. Composition substitutes bracket monomials for variables: in μ∘iν\mu \circ_i \nu the bracket ν\nu is put in place of xix_i in μ\mu, and the variables are renumbered.

Remarks

The space Lie(n)\mathrm{Lie}(n) has dimension (n−1)!(n - 1)!. A basis is given by the brackets […[ [x1,xσ(2)],xσ(3)],…,xσ(n)][\ldots[\,[x_1, x_{\sigma(2)}], x_{\sigma(3)}], \ldots, x_{\sigma(n)}], where σ\sigma runs over the permutations of {2,…,n}\set{2, \ldots, n}. For example, Lie(1)=Fx1\mathrm{Lie}(1) = F x_1, Lie(2)=F[x1,x2]\mathrm{Lie}(2) = F [x_1, x_2] is the sign representation of S2S_2, and Lie(3)\mathrm{Lie}(3) has basis [ [x1,x2],x3][\,[x_1, x_2], x_3] and [ [x1,x3],x2][\,[x_1, x_3], x_2]. The third bracket [ [x2,x3],x1][\,[x_2, x_3], x_1] is a combination of these by the Jacobi identity. An algebra over Lie\mathrm{Lie} is a vector space VV with maps Lie(n)⊗V⊗n→V\mathrm{Lie}(n) \otimes V^{\otimes n} \to V, and these are determined by the image of [x1,x2][x_1, x_2], which is a Lie bracket on VV.
