Lie subalgebra
Builds on Lie algebraLinear subspace
Definition
Let be a Lie algebra over a field . A Lie subalgebra of is a linear subspace such that for all .
Remarks
Example: in , the space of upper triangular matrices is a subalgebra. If and are upper triangular, so are and , hence so is .
Non-example: the symmetric matrices in form a subspace but not a subalgebra. For and , the bracket is , which is not symmetric.
A subalgebra with the restricted bracket is itself a Lie algebra. The intersection of subalgebras is a subalgebra, so each subset generates a smallest subalgebra containing it.
