Definition
Let be a field of characteristic . Let be a vector space over graded by . For a homogeneous element write , the parity of . A Lie superalgebra structure on is a bilinear map such that for all homogeneous :
- for all ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Example: let with and . The space , graded by the maps that preserve or swap the two parts, with on homogeneous elements, is a Lie superalgebra. Clause 1 holds because parities add under composition, and clauses 2 and 3 follow from the associativity of composition by expanding the signed products.
Non-example: take the same graded space but the ordinary commutator . For the odd elements and , clause 2 requires , but while . So clause 2 fails.
The even part is an ordinary Lie algebra, and the bracket makes a -module. A Lie superalgebra with is just a Lie algebra. Over fields of characteristic one adds the axiom for odd , and characteristic needs a separate treatment.
