Lie triple system
Builds on FieldVector spaceLie algebra
Definition
Let be a field and let be a vector space over . A Lie triple system on is a trilinear map , written , such that for all :
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Example: let be a Lie algebra with bracket and put . Clause 1 holds because . Clause 2 is the Jacobi identity. Clause 3 says that the map acts as a derivation of the triple product, and this holds because is a derivation of the bracket. The same formulas hold on any subspace of closed under the triple product, for example on the eigenspace of an involutive automorphism of .
Non-example: on with the dot product, the trilinear map fails clause 1, since for nonzero and .
Clause 1 implies the skew-symmetry , by expanding .
