Linear combinations and consistency of a linear system

Builds on Linear combinationAugmented matrixConsistent and inconsistent systemsSystem of linear equations

Statement

Let 𝐯1,…,𝐯n\mathbf v_1, \dots, \mathbf v_n and 𝐛\mathbf b be vectors in ℝm\mathbb R^m. Form the augmented matrix whose columns are 𝐯1,…,𝐯n\mathbf v_1, \dots, \mathbf v_n followed by 𝐛\mathbf b. Then 𝐛\mathbf b is a linear combination of 𝐯1,…,𝐯n\mathbf v_1, \dots, \mathbf v_n if and only if the linear system with this augmented matrix is consistent.

Moreover, each solution (c1,…,cn)(c_1, \dots, c_n) of the system gives weights with c1𝐯1+β‹―+cn𝐯n=𝐛c_1\mathbf v_1 + \dots + c_n\mathbf v_n = \mathbf b.

Remarks

The unknowns of the system are the weights c1,…,cnc_1, \dots, c_n. Each row of the system is one coordinate of the vector equation c1𝐯1+β‹―+cn𝐯n=𝐛c_1\mathbf v_1 + \dots + c_n\mathbf v_n = \mathbf b.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
