Definition

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring, let II be an ideal of RR, and let MM be an RR-module. The II-torsion functor is ΓI(M)={m∈M:Inm=0 for some n≥1}.\Gamma_I(M) = \set{m \in M : I^n m = 0 \text{ for some } n \ge 1}. It is a left exact functor from RR-modules to RR-modules. For i≥0i \ge 0, the ii-th local cohomology module HIi(M)H^i_I(M) is the ii-th right derived functor of ΓI\Gamma_I at MM. Explicitly, choose an injective resolution 0→M→E0→E1→⋯0 \to M \to E^0 \to E^1 \to \cdots by injective modules. Then HIi(M)H^i_I(M) is the ii-th cohomology of the complex 0→ΓI(E0)→ΓI(E1)→⋯0 \to \Gamma_I(E^0) \to \Gamma_I(E^1) \to \cdots.

Remarks

One has HI0(M)=ΓI(M)H^0_I(M) = \Gamma_I(M), and a short exact sequence of modules gives a long exact sequence of local cohomology. Equivalently, HIi(M)≅lim→⁡nExt⁡Ri(R/In,M)H^i_I(M) \cong \varinjlim_n \operatorname{Ext}^i_R(R/I^n, M), a direct limit of Ext modules. If I=(x1,…,xn)I = (x_1, \ldots, x_n), then HIi(M)H^i_I(M) is also the cohomology of the Čech complex 0→M→⨁iMxi→⨁i<jMxixj→⋯→Mx1⋯xn→00 \to M \to \bigoplus_i M_{x_i} \to \bigoplus_{i<j} M_{x_i x_j} \to \cdots \to M_{x_1 \cdots x_n} \to 0. Example: for R=K[x]R = K[x] and I=(x)I = (x), the Čech complex of RR is 0→R→Rx→00 \to R \to R_x \to 0, so HI0(R)=0H^0_I(R) = 0 and HI1(R)=K[x,x−1]/K[x]H^1_I(R) = K[x, x^{-1}]/K[x]. The functor ΓI\Gamma_I is not right exact: for 0→K[x]→xK[x]→K→00 \to K[x] \xrightarrow{x} K[x] \to K \to 0 with I=(x)I = (x) one gets 0→0→K0 \to 0 \to K, and the last map is not onto. If (R,𝔪)(R, \mathfrak{m}) is local and M≠0M \ne 0 is finitely generated, then H𝔪i(M)=0H^i_{\mathfrak{m}}(M) = 0 for i<depth⁡Mi < \operatorname{depth} M and i>dim⁡Mi > \dim M, and it is nonzero for i=depth⁡Mi = \operatorname{depth} M and i=dim⁡Mi = \dim M.
