Definition
Let and be topological spaces and let be a map. The map is a local homeomorphism if every has an open neighbourhood with the following two properties. The set is open in . The restriction is a homeomorphism, where and carry the subspace topology.
Remarks
A local homeomorphism is continuous and open. Every homeomorphism is a local homeomorphism, and so is the inclusion of an open subset.
Example: , . For , take . Then is the circle minus one point, which is open, and is a continuous bijection onto it with a continuous inverse given by a branch of the angle.
Non-example: , . Every neighbourhood of contains some and , with , so is not injective. At every , however, is a local homeomorphism.
