Local homomorphism
Definition
Let and be local rings. A ring homomorphism is a local homomorphism if .
Remarks
Equivalent forms:
- ;
- for every , if is a unit of , then is a unit of .
Indeed is a proper ideal containing when , so it equals . A local homomorphism induces a field homomorphism of residue fields.
Example: the quotient map is local, since it sends to , the maximal ideal of the field . For a prime ideal of a ring , the natural map is local only when .
Non-example: the inclusion is a ring homomorphism between local rings, but it is not local. It sends to , which is a unit of and so not in the maximal ideal of .
