Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be open and let PP be a linear differential operator on Ω\Omega with smooth complex coefficients. A distribution on an open set UU is a continuous linear functional on the space of test functions on UU. The operator PP is locally solvable at x0∈Ωx_0 \in \Omega if there is an open neighbourhood U⊆ΩU \subseteq \Omega of x0x_0 with the following property. For every smooth function ff on Ω\Omega there is a distribution uu on UU with Pu=fP u = f in UU, in the sense of distributions. It is locally solvable in Ω\Omega if it is locally solvable at every point of Ω\Omega.

Remarks

Example: P=∂1P = \partial_1 on ℝn\R^n is locally solvable at every point: u(x)=∫0x1f(s,x2,…,xn) dsu(x) = \int_0^{x_1} f(s, x_2, \dots, x_n) \, ds is smooth and satisfies ∂1u=f\partial_1 u = f. More generally, every nonzero operator with constant coefficients is locally solvable, by the Malgrange–Ehrenpreis theorem. Non-example: Lewy's operator L=∂x+i∂y−2i(x+iy)∂tL = \partial_x + i \partial_y - 2 i (x + i y) \partial_t on ℝ3\R^3 with variables (x,y,t)(x, y, t). There is a smooth function ff on ℝ3\R^3 such that Lu=fL u = f has no distribution solution in any open subset of ℝ3\R^3, so LL is locally solvable at no point. Some texts state the definition with slightly different classes of right-hand sides or of solutions.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
