Localization at a prime ideal
Builds on LocalizationPrime idealMultiplicative setLocal ring
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a prime ideal of . The set is a multiplicative set. The localization of at is the localization
Remarks
The ring is a local ring. Its unique maximal ideal is . Indeed, an element with has the inverse , so every element outside is a unit. The residue field is called the residue field of at .
Example: for and with prime, is the ring of rationals in lowest terms with . Its maximal ideal is and its residue field is . For in an integral domain , the localization is the field of fractions of .
Non-example: the construction needs to be prime. For the ideal of , the complement contains and but not , so it is not a multiplicative set.
Notation: for an element , the ring is the localization at the powers of , which differs from .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
