Definition

Let XX be a topological space. The space XX is locally connected if the following holds. For every point x∈Xx \in X and every open set UU containing xx, there is a connected open set VV with x∈V⊆Ux \in V \subseteq U.

Remarks

Example: ℝ\R is locally connected. For x∈Ux \in U with UU open, some interval (x−ε,x+ε)(x - \varepsilon, x + \varepsilon) lies in UU, and intervals are connected.

Non-example: ℚ\Q with the subspace topology from ℝ\R is not locally connected. Its only nonempty connected subsets are single points, and single points are not open in ℚ\Q.

Equivalently, XX is locally connected if and only if every connected component of every open subset of XX is open in XX.
