Definition
Let be or , and let be a topological vector space over . is locally convex if every neighbourhood of in contains a convex neighbourhood of .
Remarks
Equivalently, the topology of is the topology generated by a family of seminorms, namely the family of all continuous seminorms on . Many authors also require to be Hausdorff. Example: every normed space is locally convex, since the open balls are convex and form a neighbourhood base at . Convexity of a ball: if and , then . Non-example: for , the space with the metric is a topological vector space. But its only convex open set containing is the whole space, so it is not locally convex.
