Locally finite family

Builds on Topological spaceNeighbourhood

Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let (Ai)i∈I(A_i)_{i \in I} be a family of subsets of XX. The family is locally finite if every point x∈Xx \in X has a neighbourhood NN such that the set {i∈I:N∩Ai≠∅}\set{i \in I : N \cap A_i \ne \emptyset} is finite.

Remarks

Example: in ℝ\R, the family ([n,n+1])n∈ℤ([n, n + 1])_{n \in \Z} is locally finite. For x∈ℝx \in \R, the neighbourhood (x−1,x+1)(x - 1, x + 1) meets [n,n+1][n, n + 1] only when x−2<n<x+1x - 2 < n < x + 1, which holds for at most three integers nn.

Non-example: in ℝ\R, the family ((0,1/n))n≥1((0, 1/n))_{n \ge 1} is not locally finite. Every neighbourhood of 00 contains an interval (−ε,ε)(-\varepsilon, \varepsilon), which meets every (0,1/n)(0, 1/n).

If (Ai)i∈I(A_i)_{i \in I} is locally finite, then the closure of ⋃iAi\bigcup_i A_i equals ⋃iAi‾\bigcup_i \overline{A_i}. In particular, the union of a locally finite family of closed sets is closed.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
