Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let μ\mu be a Borel measure on XX. The measure μ\mu is locally finite if every point x∈Xx \in X has an open neighbourhood UU with μ(U)<∞\mu(U) < \infty.

Remarks

Example: Lebesgue measure λ\lambda on ℝn\R^n is locally finite. The open ball of radius 11 around xx has finite measure.

Non-example: counting measure on ℝ\R is not locally finite. Every open neighbourhood of a point is infinite, so it has measure ∞\infty.

A locally finite measure is finite on every compact set KK: finitely many neighbourhoods of finite measure cover KK. Conversely, if XX is a Hausdorff locally compact space and μ\mu is finite on compact sets, then μ\mu is locally finite, since each point has a compact neighbourhood.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
