Definition

Let XX be a topological space. The space XX is locally path-connected if the following holds. For every point x∈Xx \in X and every open set UU containing xx, there is a path-connected open set VV with x∈V⊆Ux \in V \subseteq U.

Remarks

Example: every open subset WW of ℝn\R^n is locally path-connected. For x∈U⊆Wx \in U \subseteq W with UU open, some open ball around xx lies in UU, and a ball is path-connected by straight segments.

Non-example: the comb space is not locally path-connected. Small open sets around (0,1)(0, 1) contain points of the teeth {1/n}×[0,1]\set{1/n} \times [0, 1], and these cannot be joined to (0,1)(0, 1) by a path inside the small set.

Every locally path-connected space is locally connected, because path-connected sets are connected. The converse fails in general.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
