Definition
Let be a ringed space, that is, a topological space with a sheaf of commutative rings on . It is a locally ringed space if for every point the stalk is a local ring. The maximal ideal of is written .
Let and be locally ringed spaces. A morphism of locally ringed spaces is a pair such that:
- is a continuous map.
- is a morphism of sheaves of rings on .
- For every , the induced ring map is a local homomorphism, that is, .
Remarks
Example: let be a smooth manifold and let be the ring of smooth real functions on the open set . A germ at is invertible in exactly when . So the non-invertible germs form the ideal , and is local. Non-example: the one-point space with the ring as its sheaf is a ringed space. Its only stalk is not local, since and are two different maximal ideals. Clause 3 is not automatic: a morphism of ringed spaces between locally ringed spaces need not satisfy it. It is the clause that makes morphisms respect "vanishing at a point".
