Loeb measure

Builds on MeasureMeasure spaceFinitely additive measure

Definition

Work in a nonstandard extension of the real numbers that is countably saturated. Let Ω\Omega be an internal set and let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be an internal algebra of subsets of Ω\Omega. Let μ ⁣:𝒜→∗[0,∞)\mu \colon \mathcal{A} \to {}^*[0, \infty) be an internal finitely additive measure such that μ(Ω)\mu(\Omega) is a finite hyperreal number. For A∈𝒜A \in \mathcal{A} let st⁡μ(A)\operatorname{st}\mu(A) be the standard part of μ(A)\mu(A), that is, the unique real number infinitely close to μ(A)\mu(A). The Loeb measure LμL_\mu of μ\mu is the unique measure on the σ-algebra σ(𝒜)\sigma(\mathcal{A}) generated by 𝒜\mathcal{A} such that Lμ(A)=st⁡μ(A)L_\mu(A) = \operatorname{st}\mu(A) for all A∈𝒜A \in \mathcal{A}. The measure space (Ω,σ(𝒜),Lμ)(\Omega, \sigma(\mathcal{A}), L_\mu) is the Loeb space of μ\mu.

Remarks

The map st⁡μ\operatorname{st}\mu is finitely additive on 𝒜\mathcal{A}. By countable saturation, if a countable union of sets of 𝒜\mathcal{A} lies in 𝒜\mathcal{A}, then it is already a finite union, so st⁡μ\operatorname{st}\mu is countably additive on 𝒜\mathcal{A}. Hence Carathéodory's extension theorem gives the extension, and it is unique because st⁡μ(Ω)\operatorname{st}\mu(\Omega) is finite. Many authors call the completion of this measure the Loeb measure.

Example: let NN be an infinite hypernatural number, let Ω={1,…,N}\Omega = \set{1, \ldots, N}, and let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be the internal power set of Ω\Omega. Let μ(A)=∣A∣/N\mu(A) = \abs{A}/N, where ∣A∣\abs{A} is the internal number of elements of AA. Then μ(Ω)=1\mu(\Omega) = 1 is finite, and LμL_\mu is a probability measure. The standard part map k↦st⁡(k/N)k \mapsto \operatorname{st}(k/N) pushes LμL_\mu forward to Lebesgue measure on [0,1][0, 1].

Non-example: on the same Ω\Omega, the internal counting measure μ(A)=∣A∣\mu(A) = \abs{A} has μ(Ω)=N\mu(\Omega) = N, which is infinite. It fails the finiteness clause, and the construction above does not apply directly. For such μ\mu one can still define a Loeb measure, through an outer measure, but it need not be the unique extension.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
