Logarithm of a matrix

Builds on Square matrixMatrix exponential

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let AA be an n×nn \times n complex matrix. A logarithm of AA is an n×nn \times n complex matrix BB such that eB=Ae^B = A, where eBe^B is the matrix exponential of BB.

Remarks

Example: A=(1101)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} has the logarithm B=(0100)B = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}. Check: B2=0B^2 = 0, so eB=I+B=Ae^B = I + B = A. Non-example: the zero matrix has no logarithm, because det⁡eB=etr⁡B≠0\det e^B = e^{\tr B} \ne 0 for every BB, by the determinant of a matrix exponential. A complex matrix has a logarithm if and only if it is invertible. If AA has no eigenvalue in (−∞,0](-\infty, 0], there is a unique logarithm whose eigenvalues have imaginary part in (−π,π)(-\pi, \pi); it is the principal logarithm, written log⁡A\log A. If ∥A−I∥<1\norm{A - I} < 1 for a submultiplicative norm, then log⁡A=∑k=1∞(−1)k+1k(A−I)k\log A = \sum_{k=1}^{\infty} \frac{(-1)^{k+1}}{k} (A - I)^k.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
