Definition

Let (X,x0)(X, x_0) be a pointed space and let I=[0,1]I = [0, 1]. The loop space of (X,x0)(X, x_0) is the set ΩX={γ ⁣:I→X continuous:γ(0)=γ(1)=x0},\Omega X = \set{\gamma \colon I \to X \text{ continuous} : \gamma(0) = \gamma(1) = x_0}, with the subspace topology of the compact-open topology on the set of continuous maps I→XI \to X. Its base point is the constant loop at x0x_0.

Remarks

Concatenation (α⋅β)(s)=α(2s)(\alpha \cdot \beta)(s) = \alpha(2s) for s≤1/2s \le 1/2 and β(2s−1)\beta(2s - 1) for s≥1/2s \ge 1/2 is a continuous product on ΩX\Omega X that is associative and unital up to homotopy. The set of path components π0(ΩX)\pi_0(\Omega X) is in bijection with π1(X,x0)\pi_1(X, x_0), and πn(ΩX)≅πn+1(X,x0)\pi_n(\Omega X) \cong \pi_{n+1}(X, x_0) for n≥1n \ge 1. For pointed spaces AA and XX, pointed homotopy classes of maps ΣA→X\Sigma A \to X from the reduced suspension correspond bijectively to pointed homotopy classes of maps A→ΩXA \to \Omega X. Example: if XX is the one-point space, then ΩX\Omega X is a single point, the constant loop. Non-example: the free loop space of all continuous maps S1→XS^1 \to X with no condition at a base point is a different space; it contains loops that miss x0x_0.
