Statement
Let be a 3-manifold with boundary , and let be a connected surface. Let be a normal subgroup of the fundamental group . Assume that the kernel of the map induced by inclusion is not contained in . Then there is an embedding of the closed disk such that the loop represents an element of that is not in .
Remarks
The version with is due to Stallings; Papakyriakopoulos proved the case in 1957. The proof uses the same tower of double coverings as the proof of Dehn's lemma. Take , and suppose some loop that is essential in becomes null-homotopic in . Then some embedded essential loop in bounds an embedded disk in . For example, if is a solid torus and is its boundary torus, the meridian disk is such a disk.

For a student
The loop theorem is the reason why "compressible" can be tested with fundamental groups. A two-sided surface in a -manifold is incompressible exactly when its fundamental group injects into that of the manifold. Together with Dehn's lemma and the sphere theorem, it is a basic step in the theory of Haken manifolds.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
