Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set with smooth boundary ∂Ω\partial \Omega, with n≥2n \ge 2, and let m≥1m \ge 1. Let AA be a linear differential operator of order 2m2m with smooth coefficients on Ω‾\overline{\Omega}, with principal symbol a(x,ξ)a(x, \xi). For x∈∂Ωx \in \partial \Omega, let ν(x)\nu(x) be the inner unit normal. Assume that AA is properly elliptic. That is, let x∈∂Ωx \in \partial \Omega and let ξ′∈ℝn\xi' \in \R^n be nonzero and tangent to ∂Ω\partial \Omega at xx. Then the polynomial τ↦a(x,ξ′+τν(x))\tau \mapsto a(x, \xi' + \tau \nu(x)) has exactly mm roots with positive imaginary part. The roots are counted with multiplicity. Let B1,…,BmB_1, \ldots, B_m be linear differential operators on ∂Ω\partial \Omega with smooth coefficients, of orders mj<2mm_j < 2m and principal symbols bj(x,ξ)b_j(x, \xi). Write Dt=−i d/dtD_t = -i \, d/dt. The operators B1,…,BmB_1, \ldots, B_m satisfy the Lopatinskii–Shapiro condition with respect to AA if the following holds. Let x∈∂Ωx \in \partial \Omega and let ξ′\xi' be a nonzero tangent vector at xx. The only bounded solution v ⁣:[0,∞)→ℂv \colon [0, \infty) \to \C of a(x,ξ′+ν(x)Dt)v(t)=0(t>0),bj(x,ξ′+ν(x)Dt)v(0)=0(j=1,…,m)a\big(x, \xi' + \nu(x) D_t\big) v(t) = 0 \quad (t > 0), \qquad b_j\big(x, \xi' + \nu(x) D_t\big) v(0) = 0 \quad (j = 1, \ldots, m) is v=0v = 0.

Remarks

Equivalently, the polynomials τ↦bj(x,ξ′+τν)\tau \mapsto b_j(x, \xi' + \tau \nu) are linearly independent modulo ∏k(τ−τk+)\prod_k (\tau - \tau_k^+), where τk+\tau_k^+ are the mm roots of a(x,ξ′+τν)a(x, \xi' + \tau \nu) with positive imaginary part. Example: A=−ΔA = -\Delta with the Dirichlet condition B1u=uB_1 u = u on the half-space {xn>0}\set{x_n > 0}. Here a(ξ)=∣ξ∣2a(\xi) = \abs{\xi}^2, ν=en\nu = e_n, and the ordinary differential equation is −v′′+∣ξ′∣2v=0-v'' + \abs{\xi'}^2 v = 0, whose bounded solutions are v(t)=c e−∣ξ′∣tv(t) = c \, e^{-\abs{\xi'} t}; the condition v(0)=0v(0) = 0 forces c=0c = 0. The Neumann condition ∂νu\partial_\nu u also passes: v′(0)=−c∣ξ′∣=0v'(0) = -c \abs{\xi'} = 0 forces c=0c = 0. Non-example: in ℝ3\R^3, take A=−ΔA = -\Delta on {x3>0}\set{x_3 > 0} with B1u=∂1uB_1 u = \partial_1 u on the boundary. For ξ′=(0,1,0)\xi' = (0, 1, 0), the function v(t)=e−tv(t) = e^{-t} is a bounded nonzero solution, since the symbol of B1B_1 is iξ1=0i \xi_1 = 0, so the condition fails.
