Lorentzian manifold
Builds on Pseudo-Riemannian manifoldSignature of a quadratic form
Definition
Let be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold of dimension . It is a Lorentzian manifold if, at each point , the form has signature . That is, in a suitable basis of the matrix of is .
Remarks
Example: Minkowski space is with coordinates and . Its matrix is at every point, with one negative and positive entries.
Non-example: with is pseudo-Riemannian, but its signature has two negative entries, so it is not Lorentzian.
Many physics texts use the opposite convention, signature , that is ; the two conventions differ by replacing with . A nonzero tangent vector is called timelike if , null if , and spacelike if (in the convention used here).
