Abstract harmonic analysis Definition
Lp spaces on groups
Definition
Let be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure , and let . The space is the Lp space . It consists of the measurable functions with , modulo equality almost everywhere, where and is the essential supremum of . For , the left translate of is .
Remarks
Another Haar measure gives the same space with the norm multiplied by , so does not depend on the choice of up to isometric scaling. Each is a linear isometry of , since is left-invariant. For and , the map from to is continuous. For groups that are not -compact, is usually defined modulo locally null sets, so that it is the dual of .
Example: with counting measure, a Haar measure. Then , and shifts a sequence: , which keeps .
Non-example of continuity for : let on . For , , so for every , and does not tend to as .
