Fluid mechanics Incompressible viscous flow Concept
Lubrication theory
Summary
Lubrication theory studies viscous flows in thin layers, where one dimension of the flow region is much smaller than the others. In such a layer the Navier–Stokes equations simplify: the pressure is constant across the layer and the velocity profile across it is parabolic. The theory explains how oil films carry the load in bearings, and it also models thin films, coating flows and Hele-Shaw flow.
