Reynolds equation
Summary
The Reynolds equation is the elliptic partial differential equation for the pressure in a thin film of viscous fluid between two surfaces. It is the central equation of lubrication theory, derived by Osborne Reynolds in 1886. Given the shape of the gap and the motion of the surfaces, it determines the pressure, and so the load that the film can carry.
