Real functions Definition

Luzin N property

Definition

Let a<ba < b be real numbers and let f ⁣:[a,b]→ℝf \colon [a, b] \to \R be a function. Write λ\lambda for Lebesgue measure on ℝ\R. The function ff has the Luzin N property if for every set E⊆[a,b]E \subseteq [a, b] with λ(E)=0\lambda(E) = 0, the image f(E)f(E) satisfies λ(f(E))=0\lambda(f(E)) = 0.

Remarks

Example: a Lipschitz function ff with constant LL has the property. Let λ(E)=0\lambda(E) = 0 and ε>0\varepsilon > 0, and cover EE by intervals IkI_k of total length less than ε\varepsilon. Each set f(E∩Ik)f(E \cap I_k) lies in an interval of length at most L⋅∣Ik∣L \cdot \abs{I_k}. So f(E)f(E) is covered by intervals of total length less than LεL \varepsilon.

Non-example: the Cantor function maps the Cantor set CC, which has measure 00, onto [0,1][0, 1], which has measure 11.

The image f(E)f(E) need not be measurable for a general ff, so the condition is read with Lebesgue outer measure. A continuous function on [a,b][a, b] has the N property if and only if it maps Lebesgue measurable sets to Lebesgue measurable sets.
