Definition
Let , let be an complex matrix, and let be an Hermitian matrix. Write for the conjugate transpose of .
- The continuous Lyapunov equation is for an unknown matrix .
- The discrete Lyapunov equation is for an unknown matrix .
Remarks
The continuous equation is the Sylvester equation . Many texts in control write it as instead, which is the same equation with in place of ; for real this reads . If every eigenvalue of has negative real part, the continuous equation has the unique solution , and is positive definite when is. If every eigenvalue of has absolute value less than , the discrete equation has the unique solution . Example: for , and , the continuous equation gives . Without the eigenvalue condition a solution may fail to exist: for , and , the continuous equation reads .
